Status:Overpopulation has been a problem with white-tailed deer. When there are too many deer, starvation weakens the entire population. Generally when this happens, predators such as the bobcat will attack the weakest deer and the population strengthened. Unfortunately, there are not enough predators in many ecosystems in North America. Deer have adapted to human interference, but predators were hunted down starting when the European settlers came to America. Today many states regulate hunting to strengthen the deer population and prevent overpopulation.

Status:Because the hare reproduces quickly, population densities can range from 1 to 10,000 hares per square mile. They are used as a main source of meat for many predators including the bobcat and lynx. These predators strengthen the population by preventing overpopulation, which can destroy vegetation and cause starvation in not only hares, but other animals such as deer as well. When the predators are not there, the population may be more prone to disease and starvation.

Status:Nearly extinct only a few decades ago, the red wolf has begun to recover with the help of captive breeding and reintroduction programs. In 1967 the red wolf was listed as an endangered species. Then in 1973 the wolfs were captured and established into breeding programs. By 1980 the red wolf was considered extinct in the wild. There were only 14 red wolves left and they were all in captivity. Then as the number of red wolves increased more were let free into the wild. There are now 270-300 red wolves. Facilities continue to breed and release red wolves making the population higher

Status:The power and stealth of the wolf has been awed by the Native Americans and Eskimos, feared by the European settlers. When the Europeans came to America, the parents often told their children that if they were not good than the big, bad wolf would come and get them. Those stories carried onto future generations, and wolves were killed whenever possible. Today wolves are just starting to make a comeback in the United States due to wonderful reintroduction programs. Yellowstone National Park has been reintroducing wolves since 1994. By 2002 the wolf will be living on its own and will no longer be considered a threatened species. Most of the wolf populations today are in the very remote areas of the earth like most of Canada and Alaska, and small isolated sections of the lower 48 states of the US and in eastern Europe.

Status:Today 125,000-150,000 grizzly bears still roam the world in isolated, undeveloped areas. The largest populations are in the coniferous forests of the former USSR. There about 100,000 black bears. In Spain, Italy, and France there are now less then 100 grizzlies in remote areas. In the US there are only about one thousand grizzly bears only 1% of what used to be their original range. The rest of the brown bears are in Canada’s western providences and Alaska with about 50,000 grizzly bears.

Status:The giant panda is a symbol for all the endangered species activists. They are slow breeding, rely on one food source, and have been shot through their previous range. The giant panda is isolated in small areas of land. In that area of land the bamboo periodically dies off as a natural cycle of life. At that time the giant panda would migrate to a different area of land with more bamboo. Unfortunately there is no place for the panda to go. When they begin to migrate they are more easily killed by farmers. A panda is worth thousands on the black market, so poaching is prevalent. The penalty for such an offense may be death, though.

Status:The distribution of tigers once ranged from eastern Turkey through southern Asia and the islands of Sumatra, Bali, and Java. After the destruction of the Asian rain forests and grasslands, today the small populations of tigers are in southeast Asia in fragmented areas. There are five out of eight subspecies left; Bengal tigers are found in Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Western Burma with a population from 3,000 to as many as 4,050; Siberian tigers are found in China, Eastern Russia, and parts of North Korea with a population of around two-hundred (there may be more in zoos then in the wild); Sumatran tigers are found only in Sumatra with a population from four to five- hundred; Indo-Chinese tigers range from Eastern Burma to Vietnam and Malaysia with populations from 1,100 to 1,800; there are about twenty or thirty South China tigers left in South China. In the 1920's, about 100,000 roamed the wild. Today, there are less than 7,000. Three subspecies are now extinct: the Caspian tigers, Javan tigers, and Bali tigers. The greatest threat to the tiger is the destruction of its habitat. As the population of humans boom, forests are logged, agriculture spreads, and the natural prey of the tiger decreases. Will the day come when tigers are found only in zoos?

Status:Little is known about the snow leopard, and what we do know is mainly through observing them in captivity. The population may be anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000. What ever the population is now, it is declining. Their habitat is being destroyed by poor farmers. After their habitat is invaded, and food is scarce, the snow leopard may go for the farmer's livestock, resulting in the snow leopard getting shot. Another major threat is skinning; a snow leopard coat can be sold for up to $60,000.

Status:During the sixties and seventies around 18,000 jaguars were killed every year for their beautiful coat. Today there is still poaching, but not nearly as bad as before. The destruction of the jaguar's habitat from logging and cattle ranching as well has having to compete with humans for food has brought a large decrease to their population. More trees are cut every day, and more jaguars are killed as the demand for their skin increases.

Status:The cheetah is extinct outside of Africa, with the exception of possible small populations in Iran. In Africa, the cheetah population is shrinking at frightening rates. Experts believe that there are less than 10,000 cheetahs left. Unlike many other cats, the cheetah has a specialized behavior and habitat it must have to survive, and does not take to change, especially at the rate that humans are thrusting on them, very easily. The destruction of it's habitat (as well as genetic aspects caused by the small populations) could bring to an end to our fastest land animal on earth.

Status:The caracal population is relatively stable except for some Asian subspecies. In India the caracal is profiting from the tiger conservations. It takes twenty caracal skins to make one coat, but they are not of high value, so trading is not very common. The future of the caracal looks optimistic.

Status:The bobcat has been valued for its fur since they illegalized the slauter of spotted cats such as the jaguar. By the late 1970's, about 95,000 bobcats were killed annually. CITES feared that this would bring an end to the bobcat, so the Fish + Wildlife organization began to monitor the killings of these cats. The bobcat is quick to change and so has done well with the incoming of humans to the Americas. Now, there are an estimated 700,000 - 1,500,000 bobcats today, but the bobcat is still hunted today and their habitat is being destroyed.

Status:Man is the primary predator of the black bear. When the Europeans settled in America they killed bears whenever possible and cleared their habitat for farms and housing. Today the black bear is making a comeback, but their is still poaching. In Asia there is a demand for bear gall bladders and paws for ancient medicinal purposes and thus poaching occurs. Regulated hunting is legal in many states.
